What does our roadmap for high-impact teacher support look like? Coach's Column Amanda Gooch May 1, 2023 What does our roadmap for high-impact teacher support look like? Being a teacher is hard work. Teachers often need the summer to refresh and recharge. Even those of you who work year-round typically spend the summer reorganizing, finalizing plans for the upcoming year and looking forward to the fresh start we all count on fall to bring. This school year may have brought many of you a wave of challenges. Amidst all of these challenges, there is a very good chance many of you were unable to recharge as often as you may have need throughout the school year. When you are running on fumes, an already challenging job can feel overwhelming and sometimes impossible . It may often feel like the starting line of a marathon year. There will always be challenges hiding behind the bends and turns that you won’t be aware of until they are right in front of you. You are going to need a compassionate, supporting team of people cheering you on and the right tools in your toolbox to get you over the finish line. Luckily, contrary to popular belief, teaching is not a solo endeavor. Teaching is a team sport. So how can directors and administrators provide the kind of high-impact teacher support that gets teachers and students where they need to be? The kind of support educators need right now is something actionable, something they can apply right away. They need concrete examples of what this work looks like. They need scaffold support that will meet them where they are and show the how to take it to the next level, a road map to navigate the race route. This is where the partnership of our early childhood education coaches here at Childcare Resources comes in. We are here to support administrators and teachers as you create a culture of growth though goal-setting, assessment, and non-evaluative feedback. We help to support and accelerate growth through informal observations, training, modeling, mentoring and professional development. As you enter into this summer season, how can we work in partnership with you to help finalize “survival guide” plans for next year as you prepare for a fresh start? How can we map a “fail proof” route so that there will be evidence for success for all? Let’s coordinate the ultimate summer road trip with prepping for summer and into next school year. Step One: Determine your destination – Where will you go to get refreshed? What will you do when you get there? Step Two: Give yourself a check-up before you hit the open road – Your health and well-being need to be the first priority. Step Three: Don’t forget to pack the essentials – Do you have all that you need to begin another incredible school year? What needs to be left behind? Step Four: Happy travels – be in the moment. Refuse to worry about tomorrow, but deal with each challenge that comes your way, one day at a time. Tomorrow will take care of itself. If you are like me and run out of ideas to relax and de-stress over the summer, click this link for 86 ideas to choose from. Which one are you looking forward to trying? Starting in June, our coaching team will be off until August. We look forward to working with you all when we return. Have an absolutely incredible summer. Make sure to come back refreshed, revived and ready to start an incredible new school year in August. Wishing you the best, Amanda Back to Coaching Back to Newsletters

What is nature-based play, and why does it matter? Coach's Column Amanda Gooch February 1, 2025 So, what is nature-based play and why does it matter? Nature-based play refers to allowing children to interact with either the natural world or a play space that mimics nature so they can connect with nature in some capacity while they fuel their imaginations. There are many benefits to nature-based play: Discover nature : Children get to learn about the outdoors and the world around them, gaining an appreciation and respect for the environment and engaging the senses. Physical activity : Outdoor play can improve relationships, reduce obesity risk, increase physical activity and reduce stress. Cognitive functioning : Longer periods outside can improve problem solving, academic and creative skills. Spending time outdoors is linked to lower cortisol levels, which is a hormone associated with stress. Time outside can also reduce fatigue, depression and anxiety. Nature-based play can be one way to ensure children are getting plenty of outside play a day, no matter where they live. “Restore balance. Most kids have technology, school and extracurricular activities covered. It’s time to add a pinch of adventure, a sprinkle of sunshine and a big handful of outdoor play.” - Penny Whitehouse Wishing you all the best, Amanda & Todd Back to Coaching Back to Newsletters

Spring 2023 newsletter, featuring Starfest and success stories Calix, 4, has been a part of the Childcare Resources program since 2019. See some of Calix’s story. Spring 2023 in this issue: Building Bright Futures You can make a difference Seen at Starfest Advancing the field DOWNLOAD (PDF) Building Bright Futures Your generosity helped a local family develop the skills needed for success! Almost a decade ago, Maileigh was in desperate need of childcare. She was a full-time student, finishing a Licensed Practical Nursing program, and she needed a place for her four-month-old daughter, Ava. When she discovered Childcare Resources, Maileigh was excited to enroll in a high-quality year-round program. “It’s wonderful to have staff that I trust to leave my children with daily,” says Maileigh. “They are like an extension of my family.” During her time at Childcare Resources, Ava flourished. When Ava’s younger brother, Avery, was born in 2019, Maileigh was able to enroll him at the school. In addition to childcare, Avery has benefited from physical, occupational, and speech therapies. “Childcare Resources has provided the support I needed to be sure my children’s developmental needs are met,” says Maileigh. While her children succeeded at Childcare Resources, Maileigh began to thrive in her career. “Shortly after I enrolled Ava, I started working as an LPN PRN,” says Maileigh. “In 2022, I graduated with my Associate’s in Nursing. I hope to graduate with my Bachelor’s in 2025.” Today, Ava is in third grade, excelling in both reading and math. Avery is still a student at the Childcare Resources School and will move to kindergarten in 2024. “My children have received a phenomenal start to their education,“ says Maileigh. “I wouldn’t have been able to pursue my career goals and continue my education if it wasn’t for you.” Up Building Bright Futures Advancing the field & studying success “Thank you for the help you give to everyone that wants to pursue their dream.” When Kayte first applied for a substitute teaching position at Learning Nest, she didn’t know that she had found her new career. As a new teacher looking for support, Kayte quickly found Childcare Resources’ outreach programs. She began attending the professional development workshops and working with one of the early education coaches. When she learned that Childcare Resources also offered the opportunity to earn credentials and degrees in early childhood education, Kayte enrolled in classes right away. “I was a young mom, and school seemed out of the question for me many years ago,” says Kayte. With assistance from Childcare Resources staff, Kayte became eligible for incentives, receiving tuition reimbursement and paid time off to attend school. She was even able to purchase a laptop to help with her studies, her first time purchasing such a luxury. “In three years, I was able to earn my CDA staff credential, my Director’s Credential, and just recently I earned my Associate’s Degree,“ says Kayte. “I finally graduated doing something I love. Thank you for the help you give to everyone that wants to pursue their dream.” Kayte has since been promoted to Director of Tiny Treasures, Learning Nest’s sister school. “Kayte is a great asset to our school,“ says Rachna Handa, owner of Learning Nest and Tiny Treasures. “She has set new standards for everyone on our team.” Up Advancing the field Seen at Starfest Thank you for supporting early childhood education for children in our community! “Knowing that someone cares is the difference between children bending and breaking,” said Dana Winters, Ph D, Executive Director of the Fred Rogers Institute. “Having a relationship – at least one – matters.” More than 300 people joined Dana and Childcare Resources in support of early childhood education at at this year’s Starfest luncheon and dinner. At Quail Valley River Club, Dana discussed the idea of simple interactions: the daily moments that build relationships and spark growth in early childhood, using examples previously filmed in local classrooms. Luncheon attendees saw the Founders Award presented to Karla Spooner in recognition of her long-term dedication and commitment to the mission of Childcare Resources. Dinner attendees heard the powerful story of Abby, a program parent. After detailing the many resources she and her family had benefited from. Abby shared the success she felt this past summer, when she and her daughter both graduated: Abby with her Bachelor’s, her daughter moving to kindergarten. As part of the Starfest weekend, Dana also presented a Simple Interactions workshop to more than 150 local early childhood educators, representing more than forty childcare centers and organizations. “Starfest is a celebration of the love and dedication we have from our supporters,” said Barbie Horton, Starfest co-chair. She continued, “Childcare Resources is multifaceted, supporting children, their parents, and their teachers in all of Indian River County to continue to ignite the minds of children.” Up Underwritten by PNC, this video was created by the Fred Rogers Institute and presented at Starfest 2023. The Simple Interactions Tool provides a common, descriptive language to talk about interactions in practice. Coach's Column Amanda Gooch March 1, 2023 It was incredible seeing those of you who were able to join us at Childcare Resources’ most recent professional development day featuring Dr. Dana Winters from the Fred Rogers Institute. Dr. Winters introduced us to the Simple Interactions tool that helped us to notice and appreciate human interactions across developmental settings. For those of you that weren’t able to join us, our training focused exploring these simple interactions and the role they play in early childhood education. The Simple Interactions Tool provides a common, descriptive language to talk about interactions in practice. In utilizing the following tool we will gain a deeper understanding of the role of interactions in human development; identify ways that human interactions can be encouraged across all levels of a system; and apply the conceptual foundation of developmental relationships to the everyday practice of supporting the learning and growing of children, families, and colleagues. One of my favorite parts of the training was when we were given opportunities to reflect on various video clips of teacher-child interactions within our community. We used the Simple Interactions tool to think about the different settings within our own work environment. We reflected on the interactions within our own practice and created connections to which interactions we tend to see and which interactions we would like to see more in our classrooms. We also discussed resiliency and how supportive relationships and active skill-building in early childhood, strengthen the foundations of resilience. She showed us factors that contribute to and support resiliency. We enjoyed her in-depth discussions on research that shows the single most common finding on children who end up doing well, have had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver or other adult. To learn more about Harvard’s Science of Resilience and why some children can thrive despite adversity, please click on this link . As your Early Childhood Education Coach I am here to help you focus on these simple interactions and work as a collaborative team to enhance your practice. We need to remind ourselves that what children need for learning is simple and deep. Together let’s explore in depth Fred Rogers’ six basic necessities of learning (PDF) . The Fred Rogers Institute has a 20 year history of looking for the helpers, respecting the unique and essential contributions they make to children’s lives, and supporting and uplifting their work. Informed and inspired by the legacy of Fred Rogers, the Helper Awards are an opportunity to honor and recognize the individuals who care for children in ordinary and extraordinary ways in their daily and professional lives. If you know of an early childhood “helper” in our community, would you consider nominating them for this incredible opportunity? I am so thankful to know so many “helpers” here in Indian River County. In our “neighborhood” there is evidence all around us as we elevate and promote the highest quality early childhood development and education. It’s an honor and a privilege to serve alongside you all. Wishing you the best, Amanda Back to Coaching Back to Newsletters

Each age and stage builds upon previous experiences. The result is a child who is less frustrated when entering school. Coach's Column Susan Roberts October 10, 2020 Hello Friends! My happy place is with children and educators so it is good to be back after this long summer! Childcare Resources’ first professional development offering will be More WHATs, HOWs, & WHY’s of Fine Motor PLUS Sensory Activities & Self-Help Skills! Dr. Marianne Gibbs will give a live presentation packed with ideas that can be easily used in the classroom with readily available materials. She is a very motivating and engaging speaker and I think you will really enjoy her interactive Zoom session. She will be sharing many ideas for working with fine motor skills which are so important to developing dexterity and strength. Both are necessary for the more formal writing demands of elementary school. I saw many of her ideas being used in classrooms after her last visit. Children enjoy using “tools” such as tweezers and materials like cotton balls and sand. Activities like stringing fruit loops on pipe cleaners and drawing on vertical surfaces or under tables is always fun! Did you notice the words in the title after the PLUS? Dr. Gibbs will be reviewing the developmental sequence of obtaining fine motor skills and giving example of appropriate activities by age. Tummy time is an activity which strengthens a child’s arms and wrists which help with the fine motor development of the hand and fingers. Self-help skills such as eating finger foods, buttoning, picking up and putting away toys, lacing, etc. all encourage motor skills. Each age and stage builds upon previous experiences. The result is a child who is less frustrated when entering school. He is able to communicate by drawing and writing letters which leads to an easier kindergarten transition. The first 75 people to sign up for Dr. Gibbs workshop will be getting a small bag of materials to use during the Zoom session and the handout delivered to their school a few days before the workshop. The only other thing you’ll need is your very full purse. I’ll leave you guessing as to what that is for! I hope to see you on Zoom! Wishing you Well! Back to Coaching Back to Newsletters
